In Men’s 1st Grade, Sharks and Redskins faced off in a highly competitive match, but an unfortunate breach of competition rules by Sharks saw the result declared a forfeit. Redskins were officially awarded the win, getting early points on the competition ladder. The other M1 clash saw Brothers put on an attacking masterclass, storming to a 10-5 victory over Frogs in an impressive display of skill and control.
There was plenty of excitement in Women’s 1st Grade, where Sharks made their long-awaited return to the top division. While their 9-2 loss to Brothers wasn’t the result they were hoping for, they showed plenty of promise and will look to build on their performance in the coming weeks. In the other W1 match, Frogs got their season off to the perfect start, securing a 6-2 win over Redskins in a well-rounded team effort.
The Men’s 2nd Grade competition was filled with drama, with several matches going down to the wire. Jots-Tigers and Redskins played out one of the closest contests of the round, with Jots-Tigers just scraping home with a 6-5 victory. Sharks took a solid 6-3 win over Brothers in a match where they controlled the tempo for most of the game. Rum Runners also made their mark, holding off a determined Frogs side to take a 5-3 victory.
The Women's 2nd grade encounter between Sharks and Brothers saw a similar one-point margin, with Brothers taking the points 3-2. In the two other matches, former Women's 1st grade Crocs defeated last year's grand finalists Jots-Tgers 4-2, while Redskins made a statement against Rum Runners going home winners 9-1.
With Round 1 now complete, attention turns to the next set of fixtures, where teams will be looking to make early statements and solidify their place in the competition. If the opening week is anything to go by, this season of the Colliers Shield is set to be one of the most exciting yet!
