Queens Park Roars Again as Colliers Shield Kicks Back Into Gear

After two straight rainouts, Round 2 of the Colliers Shield finally hit the field on Sunday in a welcome return to play for teams and officials.

After back-to-back weather delays, Round 2 of the 2025 Colliers Shield finally hit the park on Sunday in what TTF President Glen Wilson described as a “massive relief for everyone involved.”

“We really appreciate the patience shown by players and officials while we waited for the fields to become playable again.”

Recent rainfall has left several fields soft underfoot and longer in the grass than usual, as Council crews haven’t been able to mow without risking long-term surface damage.

Due to these conditions, only five fields were in use for Round 2, and the first timeslot of matches began at the earlier time of 1pm — a schedule that will remain in place next Sunday before the Easter break.

The Colliers Shield First Grade divisions featured some big match-ups, including another strong showing from Brothers Men’s 1 side, who made it two from two with a composed 5–2 win over Redskins.

Brothers have now scored 15 tries across their opening two games and are shaping up as early contenders in the top division.

Sharks bounced back from their opening round paperwork blunder — which saw them forfeit competition points — with a statement 7–3 win over Frogs to officially open their 2025 campaign.

In the Women’s 1 division, Rum Runners made a strong statement in their first match of the season, coming off a bye in Round 1 with a commanding 7–2 victory over Sharks.

Brothers also continued their unbeaten run with a 4–1 win over Frogs, building nicely after their 9–2 triumph in the opening round.

In Second Grade, Rum Runners Men’s 2 side remained undefeated after a exciting 5–4 victory over Jots-Tigers, backing up their Round 1 win over Frogs.

In the other two matches, Redskins took control early against Brothers and closed out a convincing 7–3 win while the Frogs v Sharks match was declared a forfeit due to a competition rule breach by Frogs.

In the Women’s 2 matches, Crocs impressed again with a 7–2 win over Frogs, maintaining their perfect start to the season.

Jots-Tigers also banked their first win of the year with a 4–1 result over Rum Runners, while Redskins made it two-from-two with a close 3-2 victory over Sharks.

There were several close contests across the grades, including the 1-point thriller in Men’s 2 and a draw between Redskins and Sharks Black in the Men’s 3 division.

Brothers White and Rum Runners played out a 3–3 draw in Women’s 3, capping off a full day of action that showcased the depth across the Colliers Shield.

Next Sunday’s third round will also be the final hit-out before the inaugural ANZAC Day Challenge, set to take place on Thursday 24 April under lights at Queens Park.

The historic event will see Townsville’s top players go head-to-head with the best North Queensland-based Defence Force personnel across three high-quality showcase matches.

A commemorative pre-match ceremony will be held before the first game, paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand military personnel, and marking the importance of ANZAC Day in the community.

The Challenge is the first of its kind in the region, and Townsville Touch Football hopes to see a strong crowd at Queens Park to support what’s set to become a special annual fixture on the calendar.

TTF also confirmed there will be no matches played on Sunday 20 April due to the Easter break, with regular scheduling expected to resume from the following weekend.
