Men’s Open Spotlight: Firepower, Leadership and Composure Ahead of ANZAC Day Finale

The final match of the 2025 ANZAC Day Challenge promises to be a high-octane showdown, with the Townsville Saints and NQ Defence Crocs naming key playmakers who bring international experience, elite athleticism, and razor-sharp decision-making to the main event.

Saints coach Rhys Bevan has assembled a stacked side featuring two Indigenous All Stars and one of the most relentless wingers in the region.

Kristian Congoo and Shaemus Edwards headline the Saints attack — both with Australian Emus representative history and an undeniable connection on the field when they line up together.

“They don’t often get to play in the same side, but when they do, they’re nearly unstoppable,” Bevan said. “They’re game changers — the kind of players who turn pressure into points.”

Congoo, now in the veteran stage of his elite-level career, still brings creativity and control, while Edwards is in peak form following a standout performance at the 2024 FIT World Cup in Nottingham.

Out wide, Malachy Friel is set to play a key role — a workhorse winger who consistently saves tries, racks up metres, and never lets the tempo drop.

“Malachy is the busiest guy on the field — he works tirelessly and puts his body on the line every set,” Bevan added.

But the Crocs Men’s Open side, led by player-coach Matthew Sullivan, aren’t just there to compete — they’re there to win.

Sullivan himself is one of the team’s anchors, known for his calm on-field presence, instinctive decision-making, and ability to elevate those around him. A regular fixture in the Colliers Shield Men’s 1st Grade and a long-time Defence rep player, Sullivan’s leadership will be vital under the lights.

“Matt knows how to steady the ship and bring out the best in his team,” said Crocs organiser Damien Scott.

“He’s a natural leader and reads the game better than most.”

Outside him, Daniel Stiff offers finishing class and crisp delivery — a versatile player with a strong pass off both sides and an eye for the tryline.

“Dan’s a seriously well-rounded player,” Scott said.

“If he gets even half a look near the line, he’s likely finishing it.”

Rounding out the trio is Isaac Rosenberg, a composed presence with great timing and line-running instincts, particularly when attacking close to the line.

“Isaac just doesn’t rattle,” Scott said.

“Even when the game tightens up, he stays calm and executes.”

The Men’s Open match will tap off at 7:40pm, following the commemorative ceremony at 5:45pm, the Men’s Over 30s at 6:00pm, and the Women’s Open at 6:50pm. The winner of the series will be awarded the ANZAC Day Challenge Shield at the conclusion of the final match.
